Three Perfect Days in Encinitas: Fun & Sun ~ One Taco at a Time

Encinitas is the perfect blend of beach town charm and SoCal culture. Whether you’re a sun-seeker, a foodie, or an adventure enthusiast, Encinitas offers everything you need for an unforgettable getaway. Here’s how to spend three fun-filled days soaking up the sun, indulging in the areas famous delicious tacos, and embracing the laid-back vibe of Encinitas.

Day 1: Beach Bliss and Local Flavors

Morning: Surf and Sand at Moonlight Beach

Start your day with a visit to Moonlight Beach, one of Encinitas’ most iconic spots. With its wide stretch of soft sand, volleyball courts, playground, concession stand, lifeguard tower and gentle waves, it’s the best swath of beach to spend a morning.  Want to try and hang ten?  Local surf schools offer lessons that will have you riding the waves in no time.

Lunch: Tasty Tacos at Juanita’s

After a morning in the sun, head north to Juanita’s Taco Shop, a local favorite known for its authentic Mexican flavors and great prices. Order their famous carnitas tacos, packed with fresh ingredients and bursting with flavor. Don’t forget to try their homemade salsa, which adds just the right amount of kick to every bite.

Afternoon: Explore the Downtown Area

Stroll through downtown Encinitas, where you’ll find an eclectic mix of boutique shops, art galleries, and cafes. Stop by the historic La Paloma Theatre, one of the oldest movie theaters in the country, or visit the Encinitas Library for stunning ocean views from the reading terrace.

Dinner: Sunset and Tacos at The Taco Stand

As the day winds down, make your way to The Taco Stand for dinner. Located just a short walk from the water, this spot is famous for its al pastor tacos—marinated pork with pineapple, served on a warm corn tortilla. Grab a seat on the outdoor patio, and enjoy the historic Pacific Coast Highway 101 vibes.

Day 2: Adventure and Eats

Morning: Yoga and Breakfast at Swami’s Beach

Start your second day with a peaceful yoga session at Swami’s Beach, a renowned surf spot with a spiritual aura. The serene environment and stunning ocean views make it an ideal place to find your zen. Afterward, head to Swami’s Café, a beloved local spot, for a hearty breakfast. Try the acai bowl or one of their delicious breakfast burritos.

Lunch: Taco Feast at Las Olas

Continue your taco tour at Las Olas, a beachfront eatery that’s been serving up delicious Mexican cuisine for decades. Their Baja-style fish tacos are a must-try, perfectly crispy and served with fresh toppings. Pair your meal with a cold cerveza and enjoy the view of the ocean waves.

Afternoon: Beach Day at Cardiff State Beach

Hop across the street to Cardiff State beach for an afternoon of lounging. Its wide, sandy shoreline and gentle waves make it an ideal spot for sunbathing or swimming. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a paddleboard at Cardiff Surf Company and explore the calm waters, or simply relax and take in the natural beauty of the area.

Dinner: Gourmet Tacos at Death by Tequila

For dinner, treat yourself to a gourmet taco experience at Death by Tequila. This trendy spot takes tacos to the next level with creative fillings like pork shoulder confit, grilled jidori chicken and mushroom barbacoa. Pair your meal with one of their craft cocktails for a perfect end to your day.

Day 3: Relaxation and Coastal Charm

Morning: Explore the Meditation Gardens

Ease into your final day with a visit to the Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens. This peaceful sanctuary offers beautifully landscaped gardens, koi ponds, and stunning cliffside views of the ocean. It’s the perfect place to reflect and relax before continuing your adventures.

Lunch: The Freshest Fish Tacos You Can Find at The Fish Shop

For a unique seafood taco experience, head to The Fish Shop in Encinitas, known for its fresh catches of the day. You can choose from ahi, albacore, lobster, diver scallops, shrimp, mahi mahi, red snapper, salmon, seabass, swordfish or yellowtail grilled or fried on fresh corn or flour tortillas – all delicious. The casual, indoor/outdoor setting adds to the laid-back Encinitas vibe.

Afternoon: Hike the San Elijo Lagoon

Work off those tacos with an easy hike around the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve. This coastal wetland is home to a variety of wildlife and offers scenic trails that wind through marshes, dunes, and coastal sage scrub. For extra calorie- burning, explore the Annie’s Canyon Trail loop, a local favorite, with its narrow sandstone walls and panoramic views at the top.

Dinner: Final Stop at Cocina de Barrio in The Lumberyard

End your three-day taco tour with a visit to Cocina de Barrio, a vibrant and modern Mexican restaurant that offers a unique twist on traditional Mexican cuisine. Located in the heart of Encinitas, this culinary gem stands out with its Tacos de Birria: your choice of 10 hours-braised beef or lamb served in a hand pressed corn tortilla. The restaurant’s warm and inviting ambiance and eclectic cocktail menu is a perfect way to end your 3-day tour.
