Encinitas is a year-round paradise, where “summer never ends,” but ask any local, and they’ll tell you that the best time to visit isn’t necessarily during the busy summer months. Instead, savvy travelers and residents alike know that the magic truly happens after Labor Day. Welcome to “Local’s Summer,” in the Fall, a time when the weather is still perfect, the beaches are less crowded, and you can experience the city like a true Encinitan. Here’s a guide to some of the best things to do in Encinitas during the Fall.
Explore the Beaches
Encinitas is renowned for its stunning beaches, and fall is the perfect time to enjoy them without the summer crowds. Head to Moonlight Beach or Swami’s Beach for a peaceful day of relaxing, beachcombing, or simply taking in the breathtaking ocean views. The fall sunsets here are nothing short of spectacular, casting warm hues over the Pacific.
Visit Encinitas Farmers Markets
Every Saturday in Cardiff and Sunday in Leucadia, Encinitas Farmers Markets come alive with fresh produce, artisanal goods, and local crafts. Fall is Harvest season, so expect an abundance of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Stroll through the markets, sample local delicacies, and pick up some handmade crafts to take home. It’s a perfect way to experience our local culture.
Hike Like a Local
Encinitas is known for its stunning coastal hikes and trails, and Fall is ideal for hiking, as the weather cools down and the trails become less crowded. If you want to hike like a local, head a little inland and check out Spooks Canyon Trail in Olivenhain. Named for a Welshman named Spook in a wooded area said to be haunted by the “White Lady” that floats above the ground, Spooks Canyon can be reached by parking on Brookside Drive (off Lone Jack Road). Follow the horse friendly path, hop over the rocks to forge a small stream and continue up the canyon. The peak rewards hikers with sweeping views toward Rancho Santa Fe and an informational sign highlighting native birds and wildlife. Keep an eye out for migrating birds that visit the area during this season.
Enjoy Local Breweries and Wineries
As the weather cools, it’s the perfect time to indulge in the local craft beer and wine scene. Visit one of the many breweries like Modern Times, Fox Point Farms Brewing or Duckfoot Brewing Co., where you can enjoy seasonal brews. For wine lovers, a trip to Solterra for wine tasting will delight your tastebuds with grapes sourced from Sonoma County, Lake County, Paso Robles, San Diego County and Baja Mexico. Solterra wines have garnered Golds and Best of Class at top competitions in California.
Enjoy Yoga on the Beach
Encinitas is known as a hub for yoga and wellness. Take advantage of the mild fall weather by participating in a beach yoga class. Many studios offer outdoor sessions where you can practice mindfulness and meditation while listening to the sound of the waves.
Relax and Unwind
Finally, don’t forget to take some time for yourself. Whether it’s enjoying a warm drink at a local café or pampering yourself at a nearby spa, the fall season is a perfect opportunity to unwind and reflect.
