Red, White & Beach: Celebrate 250 Years of America the Encinitas Way

America turns 250 this Independence Day, making this year’s 2026 celebration extra special. With July 4 falling on a Saturday, it’s the perfect excuse for a long weekend of sunshine, freedom, and coastal adventure! Spend the day celebrating small-town traditions at the Olivenhain Parade, step back in time with hands-on America’s 250th activities at the Encinitas Historical Society’s 1883 Schoolhouse, pack a picnic for Moonlight Beach or the Cardiff Tide Pools, enjoy fresh coastal dining, then end the evening with spectacular fireworks just minutes away in Carlsbad, Del Mar, Mission Bay, or downtown San Diego. Whether you’re planning a family getaway, a beach day with friends, or a festive weekend staycation, Encinitas is the perfect home base for a classic Southern California Fourth of July celebration.

Live Like a Local and Start at the Olivenhain 4th of July Parade

Kick off the day bright and early at the beloved Olivenhain Parade, starting around 11 a.m. at the Meeting Hall (423 Rancho Santa Fe Rd). Boy Scout Troop 2000 will lead the pledge of allegiance and then the parade will commence making its way around the block. Families decked out in red, white and blue decorate bikes, wagons, even ATVs. It’s small-town charm at its best—great for selfies and post-parade picnic on the grounds. More information here.

Make it a Beach Picnic Day: Moonlight, Swami’s & Cardiff Tide Pools

Celebrate the holiday weekend with a classic SoCal beach day. Encinitas beaches are ideal for sunny lounging, splashing in the waves, and sharing a seaside picnic. Moonlight State Beach is family-friendly with lifeguards, volleyball courts, a playground, picnic-ready grassy areas, and even fire pits for later in the day (note: alcohol is not permitted). Just south, Swami’s offers a more laid-back vibe with breathtaking bluff-top views—perfect for a peaceful snack break or sunset picnic with friends. Grab the family and go to Cardiff State Beach early to beat the summer crowds and arrive at low tide to explore the Cardiff Reef Tide Pools. During low tide, these coastal wonders transform into a playground for children, where they can frolic among the smooth rocks, remnants of the ancient Table Top reef, and uncover a wealth of marine life nestled in every crevice.

Grab & Go or Dine Nearby

Skip the kitchen and pick up picnic provisions from one of the many local favorites nearby. Grab burritos or poke bowls to-go, stop for beachy bites at spots like The Taco Stand or Coffee Coffee or stop by Seaside Market in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, a beloved local gem known for its “Cardiff Crack” tri-tip, fresh deli options, gourmet snacks, and beach-ready meals. If you’re planning a sit-down meal after your beach time, make reservations early at coastal spots like Cocina de Barrio (known for killer chilaquiles and margaritas), Pacific Coast Grill (for oceanfront seafood), or Vaga at Alila Marea for elevated coastal cuisine with a view.

It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Society’s 1883 one-room schoolhouse, the oldest building in Encinitas, located at 390 West F Street and sharing a parking lot with the Pacific View Arts Center. The program is free and open to everyone ages 6 through 106. Check the latest on the Encinitas Historical Society events page.
