Cardiff-by-the-Sea

The area’s name “by-the-Sea” was added by German musician Victor Kremer, who took it from the song “By the Beautiful Sea.” The town’s history dates back to 1911, when Clarence Cole established a kelp works along the bluffs of San Elijo Lagoon. The area has since grown and developed, with the establishment of the Cardiff School District in 1913 and the first Cardiff library in 1914.
Cardiff-by-the-Sea is home to several well-known surf spots, including Swami’s and Cardiff Reef. The area also features public restrooms and showers at Cardiff State Beach and two other locations north of the river mouth. Lifeguards are staffed seasonally, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for beachgoers.

Leucadia
The Leucadia community in Encinitas, California boasts a rich history with a unique origin. Its name, derived from the Greek island of Lefkada, was bestowed upon it by a San Diego-based development company, which also adorned its streets with Roman-Greco names like Hymettus, Neptune, Phoebe, and Daphne. Founded in 1870 by British spiritualists seeking religious freedom, Leucadia evolved into a haven for artists, surfers, and free spirits, attracting independent galleries, surf shops, and natural food stores.
The thriving Leucadia Community Arts scene prioritizes local artists and creatives. This popular event, held along North Coast Highway 101, combines art, music, and entertainment, drawing approximately 8,000 attendees. Featuring live art demos, music, dancers, kids' activities, a makers market, and a beer garden, the free event celebrates the work of local and regional artists through a juried art show. It's a fantastic opportunity to support the local arts community while enjoying a fun-filled day with loved ones.
Olivenhain
Olivenhain, a neighborhood in Encinitas, California, has a rich history dating back to 1884. The area was founded by a group of 25 German-speaking immigrants who established the colony of Olivenhain, which means “olive grove” in German. The settlers were attracted to the area due to its fertile soil and mild climate, making it ideal for farming.
Olivenhain, Encinitas, California, is a neighborhood with a recreational reserve, Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve, which offers approximately 11 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails, as well as picnic areas and scenic mountain viewing points. The reserve is managed by Olivenhain Municipal Water District, a public agency providing water, wastewater services, recycled water, hydroelectricity, and the operation of the reserve.
